I have yet to see or hear of one of these one line PC Doc Fix All programs that actually works and most of it is smoke and mirrors and voodoo. Especially when they say you need to fix your registry, not a good idea! PLEASE use another option.

Sun Microsystems has just released the newest version of their office suite. And not only is it cross compatible with Microsoft Office templates, it is 100% free! You can now save your docs in PDF format. I love that! The suite includes: writer (like Word) Calc (Excel) Draw (Paint) Impress (Power point) and a bunch of other cool features. If you like Microsoft Office but don't like the price tag, free Open Office is the way to go!www.openoffice.org

Part of the free Windows Live suite is “Live Writer” . The new 2011 version is out now and has a lot more functionality and layout of Office 2010.

It seems to work well after a 5 minute learning curve.

It’s worth a look if you want to more than just post text to your blog, it makes for example adding pics and forms much easier.

Open Access WiFi a huge risk!

Although the problem has existed for a long time, there is now an easy to use free program called Firesheep that makes it easy to log onto your computer, get into your accounts , passwords, make changes to your pages and it is scary easy!

The fix is easy, just ask the coffee shop or where ever to add a WPA password. It doesn’t matter if the hacker knows the password, it will still isolate the issue.

Please let your local shop owners know and ask them to make this simple fix.

If you don’t have an operating system ,there is hope.

If your systems crashes and you do not have a back up or you just don’t have the restore disc anymore and you can’t afford to buy Windows 7, there is hope.

There is a free (open source) operating system developed by fans who want to share their work and love of technology. It is called Unbuntu and the latest and greatest version “Lucid Lynx” is an excellent system. It is much easier to install and use than previous versions.

It even looks and acts a lot like Windows. It comes with a GREAT photo program called “Gimp” that is very similar to Photoshop CS3, it has an office suite I recommend called Open Office and there are tons of programs you can download for free.

EVEN BETTER! You can run it right from the CD! You don’t even have to install it on your hard drive. Once you test it and it works, its pretty easy to install. However if you area newbie I suggest you give us a call, there can be some issues and questions that we can help you with and show you the basics of how to use the system and update it.

“Lucid Lynx” is much safer than Windows and there is a Windows Emulator that will allow you to run any Windows programs.

Browser. While Windows comes with Internet Explorer for several reasons it is a very unsafe browser to use. There are several free browsers that are safer to use than IE.

I personally recommend and use exclusively “Chrome” from Google. It is also also the easiest for the average user to browse with. It has multiple tabs so you can have several pages open at once.

Another would be” Firefox”. It is used by a lot of people but is probably a browser used by more experienced users. To be honest, even I felt like it was a little difficult to use at first.

There are other you might want to look into including Maxthon, Opera & Safari.

Office Suites. The gold standard is Microsoft Office 2010. It is very expensive! There is a great solution that is open sources, totally free and will open and save files in the Microsoft format. They have programs that are very similar to Office Word, Power Point, Paint and Excel. Get the FREE download at www.openoffice.org

Anti Virus. Microsoft has finally out a great free program. The Microsoft Security Suite. It is very good at catching malware- virus issues and spy wear. All on it’s own with out using up a lot of system resources. You can it here: Security Essentials I use to be a fan of AVG Free but that is not the case anymore. In fact, I would suggest you are better off with the Microsoft Product than the paid AVG program. Or most others. Now, your behavior is far more important that the software you use but why pay for it if you can get it free. Many new computers come with trial versions of anti virus, remove it! Find the removal tool for your particular program and get rid of it They use up resources and cause a false sense of security.

Windows - System Restore-one of the best tools people forget about.

Have you ever had your system crash or a driver become corrupt? There are many reason this can happen, such as a power failure or a bad install of Windows Update. There is an easy fix that works 90% of the time. Now if you have a virus or malware this will not be the fix but for other problems like those I described a second ago, system restore is great. It is basically a time machine that will return your system to the previous working state.

There are several ways to get to system restore. We will use Windows 7 as an example but it is available on Win 2K, XP and Vista. Go to the start menu, then all programs, accessories, system tools and system restore. You would pick the last working date and click on it and then follow the on screen notes to fix the system. It does take some time to do and will need to reboot and then continue the restore. And you are done.

I strongly suggest that you find the system restore and make sure you have a few restore points. Each time you get an update from Windows, it will set up a restore point, or it is supposed too but make sure you have those points.

All o/s from Windows from the last ten years or more has a virus known as the Lnk Vulnerability. Windows will not have an automatic fix/patch until the second Tuesday of the month. If you do not feel comfortable doing a registry edit to fox this problem by disabling the logos and info within the desktop icons.

By now, most of you know of Hulu, great free service to watch TV shows and lots of movies. With a large selection of current shows and limited commercials it is really very good. www.hulu.com

Windows Vista and 7 users have access to Windows Media Center that also has many TV shows and features. In my opinion Hulu is the better site as it offers more content and fewer commercials. With my wireless N router I can easily watch 720p HD video with no buffering at all.

Now if you have Netflix, they have a lot of TV shows and movies you can watch online at no additional cost.

Microsoft has released it’s latest and possibly greatest operating system called ”Windows 7”

To be honest I must agree with the critics this is a very good O/S. You can upgrade from XP or Vista but I highly recommend that you do a full clean install. If you buy Windows 7 Professional they will include XP in a virtual mode.

You can purchase the system form Amazon or Best Buy, Office Depot or Staples.

Copy protected DVD's

I get asked a lot what to use to copy movies. Firstly you should know that to copy protected movies is illegal. Even to make yourself a back up copy of the movies. Even if you just want to put the movie onto your hard drive or portable movie player. Having said that, I use a paid program called DVD Fab 5 Platinum. DVD Fab 5 There are free programs out there but I have never found one that works easily in some cases, at all.

DVD Fab will allow you to copy a DVD, place it on your hard drive or portable player. I use it to put movies I purchase onto my IPOD Touch. It will eliminate the copy protection and encode it to a format that will play on my IPOD. Be advised encode a movies onto a portable player takes time. It's not a quick process but it is very easy.

The Platinum version will set you back 50 dollars.

"Ready Boost" for Vista & Windows 7

Vista has a pretty nifty feature that allows you to easily add more ram without opening up your computer. This is done by using any type of flash or thumb drive. For example, I am using a SD card out of my camera that has four gigs on it. So combined with my 2 gigs on board, I am running nearly 6 gigs. And the improvement is obvious in some cases and hardly noticeable in others.

To run a test I opened Adobe Photoshop with out the SD card and it took 12.5 seconds to open on average. With the card in it went to 5.5 seconds on average. That's a pretty big difference. To use a ready boost capable device ( like a 9 dollar 2 gig USB drive ) when you first connect it up, Vista will ask you if you want to use ready boost. Just say yes and let windows pick the best size. Now this won't improve gaming and it won't work on more than one device. So add as much in one stick as you can. You can also right click on the drive, go to properties and then the ready boost tab.
